Aqara Wall Outlet H2 UK Review

verdict

The Aqara Wall Outlet H2 UK is a smart home upgrade that can be mounted on the wall. It looks clean, installs effortlessly, and offers a level of flexibility not found in most smart outlets. Zigbee allows for a full feature set and per-socket power monitoring, but in a fairly lightweight format, while Thread keeps things simple and completely Matter-native. Factoring in decent USB-C fast charging and full independent control, this is one of the most powerful smart wall outlets currently available in the UK, no matter what smart home platform you’re using.

  • Easy to install

  • Zigbee or native Matter-over-Thread

  • independent socket control

  • Smart USB-C charging

  • Requires Zigbee (and hub) for full functionality

  • Pretty basic power monitoring

  • Available in white only

introduction

Smart plugs do their job, but they’re rarely elegant. These tend to be bulky, block adjacent sockets, and look like a temporary fix rather than something to permanently install.

Smart wall outlet solves it properly. The wall outlet H2 UK is Aqara’s most complete version to date.

It’s a perfect replacement for the UK Double Socket with built-in smart controls, USB-C fast charging, and energy monitoring, all wrapped up in a design that wouldn’t look out of place on a regular wall.

The big selling point here is flexibility. Like some recent Aqara devices, the H2 supports both Thread and Zigbee, and assuming you have an Aqara hub already set up, you can choose between clean Matter integration or Aqara’s deeper feature set.

It’s also one of the few smart outlets that can independently control both the socket and USB-C port, which proves to be much more convenient than it looks.

design and components

As with any wall outlet, the H2 is about as good-looking as you can hope for.

The design is simple, modern, and understated, and doesn’t look like overt smart home hardware.

There’s a discreet LED-lit button above each socket, making it clear what’s powered on and giving you physical control without reaching for your phone.

Installation is easy if you are familiar with changing sockets. Obviously the power supply has to be switched off at the mains and then it is wired like a standard UK double outlet.

The whole process took about 15 minutes, in part because I chose a socket that had multiple spurs connected to it, so I had to wrestle with far more cables than usual. In this situation, an additional ground terminal is useful.

Aqara includes spacers in the box. Be careful if your existing back box is on the shallow side.

Mine was somewhere in between, and I probably could have gotten by without the spacers, but the added depth from the extra wiring was welcome.

Once installed, the H2 works perfectly as a regular electrical outlet. The physical buttons still directly control power, so everyone in your family can use it without any apps, automation, or issues to understand.

Setup and apps

The setup follows Aqara’s now familiar approach and is completely painless. Once powered on, the outlet will show up as ready to be added in the Aqara Home app. From there, it’s up to you to decide how your device will operate on a day-to-day basis.

Out of the box, the H2 is set to threaded mode. From here, you can use a compatible Matter controller to add it directly to platforms like Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, or bring it into Aqara Home if you have a Thread-enabled Aqara hub like M3.

In this mode, the outlet also acts as a Thread router, helping to power the Thread network instead of just sitting at the edge of it.

With Zigbee, there is a complete experience. Switching protocols takes about 5 minutes and follows the same process as switching back later.

Zigbee requires an Aqara Zigbee 3.0 hub, but unlocks child lock, advanced button actions, LED indicator settings, power limits, and individual power monitoring for each socket.

Matter support is still available via the Aqara Matter bridge, so you are no longer locked into the Aqara ecosystem.

However, there is one caveat. When bridged to something like HomeKit or Home Assistant, only two sockets are exposed as a smart device, not the USB-C port.

Features and smart controls

Regardless of protocol selection, each socket can be controlled individually within the app or via physical buttons.

The USB-C port is also smart and independently controllable, but the same Matter bridging limitations apply. This is a welcome change from many smart outlets and power strips that treat USB ports as permanently powered additions.

Button behavior can be kept basic or expanded depending on the degree of control you want. In single press mode, the button simply turns power on and off.

Multifunction mode opens up functionality and allows you to trigger scenes and automations with a double press or long press. Turning a wall outlet into a smart button may sound strange, but it works surprisingly well.

For example, a long press to start your morning kitchen routine will instantly feel natural.

LED indicators are also configurable. These can be completely disabled, set as locator lights, or set to display different colors for each state in Zigbee mode. This is a subtle feature, but it helps the outlet fit into different rooms and setups.

Safety features are handled sensibly, with Child Lock disabling physical buttons while retaining app and voice control, and built-in overheating and overload protection to automatically power down if something goes wrong.

power monitoring

Power monitoring is also included, but expectations must be realistic. In Zigbee mode, you can get per-socket data in daily, weekly, and monthly views, but USB-C power usage is grouped with the first socket.

In threaded or matter mode, monitoring is combined across both outlets.

This information can still be useful for identifying trends and building simple automations, such as turning off a charger when a device is full or sending a notification when a wash cycle is finished.

It’s not as detailed as a dedicated power plug like the Eve Energy, but it covers the basics pretty well for a recessed wall outlet.

The integrated USB-C port is one of the H2’s most powerful features. The single USB-C model I tested offers up to 20W fast charging, which is plenty for phones, tablets, and accessories, and Aqara says it can charge a modern iPhone to 30-50% in about 30 minutes.

There’s also a dual USB-C version. This provides up to 30W when a single port is used and up to 15W per port when both are connected.

Importantly, the USB-C power supply here is not permanently running, but rather smart, app-controllable, and automation-friendly.

final thoughts

The Aqara Wall Outlet H2 UK is exactly what a smart wall outlet should be. It removes the clutter of external smart plugs, adds really convenient USB-C charging, and gives you real choice in how you integrate it into your smart home.

Threaded mode keeps things clean and Matter-native, but Zigbee opens up deeper features in Aqara that advanced users will appreciate. The power monitoring feature is competent, if not best-in-class, and the idea of turning a wall outlet into a multifunctional smart button came to mind sooner than I expected.

This is recommended if you are already using Aqara. If not, this stands out as one of the most flexible and thoughtfully designed smart wall sockets currently available for UK homes.
