Govee’s new light bulbs have a vintage look that we love

Smart lighting is steadily moving towards customization and app control, but in modern smart home settings most light bulbs prioritize function over aesthetics, with design often taking a backseat.

That balance is starting to change, as Govee has introduced a new vintage-style smart light bulb that combines classic Edison design with features typically reserved for more modern smart lighting products.

The Govee E27 Smart Edison Light Bulb 500lm features a clear glass finish and visible spiral filament design to visually match traditional light bulbs while integrating dimmable smart features and connected lighting controls.

This approach reflects the growing demand for smart home devices that blend into interior design rather than stand out as purely technical additions, especially in spaces where lighting directly contributes to ambiance.

A fusion of vintage design and smart lighting functionality

This bulb provides up to 500 lumens of brightness, which is well within the typical range for decorative lighting rather than high-output lighting, making it more suitable for ambient settings than primary indoor lighting.

Supporting both white and color lighting modes, users can switch between warmer colors and more vibrant effects, improving ease of use compared to traditional Edison-style bulbs, which typically provide a fixed lighting output.

The color temperature can be adjusted between 2,700K and 6,500K, covering a range from warm ambient light to cool daylight, suitable for different times of day and activities.

A color rendering index above 90 approaches a higher quality lighting option, and more accurate color reproduction is noticeable in everyday environments such as living spaces and work areas.

Control remains app-based through Govee’s platform, allowing users to adjust brightness, create lighting scenes, sync effects and music, and schedule operations in conjunction with the standard smart lighting ecosystem.

Low-cost alternative to Philips Hue

The new bulbs enter a market that Philips Hue has long dominated in premium smart lighting, particularly decorative formats such as Edison-style bulbs that combine design and connected functionality.

Prices highlight an important difference, with Govee offering the bulbs in some parts of Europe for £19.99 or €24.99, significantly below many premium smart lighting options such as IKEA’s smart bulbs, while still including full color support.

This gap reflects a broader trend of new brands competing on price while expanding their feature sets, challenging established players that have historically focused on ecosystem integration and long-term reliability.

The Govee Edison-style light bulbs are currently available through Amazon in the UK and Europe, and will become even more widely available through Govee’s official channels from early next month.
