The best features of AirTag are now on Apple Watch. Here’s how to set it up:

Apple’s AirTag 2 has several improvements over the original model. One of these is extending AirTag’s most powerful feature, precision search, to the Apple Watch. Here’s how to set it up:

AirTag 2 extends precision search to Apple Watch

AirTag’s primary purpose is to assist in finding lost objects. And the best feature for doing that has long been precision search.

Precision Finding uses tactile, visual, and audio feedback to guide you step-by-step directly to your lost item.

AirTag 2 improves on this feature even further with increased range, allowing precision search to work from up to 1.5x further away than the first AirTag.

But AirTag 2 has another important improvement in accuracy detection. This feature is now available on Apple Watch for the first time.

However, as my colleague Ben pointed out in his hands-on review, the configuration method is not very intuitive.

On Apple Watch, you typically use the Find My Item app to track down a lost AirTag.

However, to use Precision Finding, Control Center appears instead of watchOS.

How to set up and use Precision Finding

According to Apple, here’s how to set up Precision Finding:

  1. Press the side button on your Apple Watch to open Control Center
  2. Scroll to the bottom and tap Edit
  3. Tap the Add button in the top left corner
  4. Scroll down to “Find Items” and tap “Find AirTag”
  5. Tap to add item to Control Center

Once added to the Control Center, an AirTag will display a special icon that matches its item type. For example, AirTag 2 is in your backpack, so you’ll see your backpack in Control Center.

There are both hardware and software requirements for using Precision Finding on Apple Watch.

  • hardware: Requires AirTag 2 and Apple Watch Series 9 or later, or Apple Watch Ultra 2 or later.
  • software: Requires watchOS 26.2.1 or later

Having quick access to Precision Finding directly from the control center is very convenient. I also like that it automatically assigns a different icon to each item you add. It would be nice if this feature was also available in the Find My Items app, perhaps in a future update.

AirTag 2 is available for purchase on Amazon.
