Apple TV continues to prove itself as a destination for sci-fi fans, with two of the streamer’s most popular hits inspiring upcoming spinoff series.
Star City is a spin-off of For All Mankind and arrives on May 29th
Long before Severance, Pluribus, and Silo, For All Mankind was Apple TV’s first sci-fi series.
A new season of For All Mankind is currently in production, with season 5 scheduled to air later this month.
As soon as that season ends, a new spin-off series, Star City, will debut.
Star City, like For All Mankind, is an alternate history space race drama set in the same basic world and storyline. But instead of focusing on the Americans, it tells the story from a Soviet perspective.
Here’s Apple’s official synopsis:
A bold new chapter inspired by the acclaimed space race drama For All Mankind, Star City is a propulsive paranoia thriller that transports us back to a key moment in the space race’s alternate history: when the Soviet Union became the first nation to land a man on the moon. But this time, we explore the story from behind the Iron Curtain, showing the lives of the cosmonauts, engineers, and intelligence officers embedded in the Soviet space program and the risks they all took to advance humanity.
Star City will arrive on Apple TV with two episodes on Friday, May 29th, and will be released weekly thereafter until July 10th.
‘Monarch: Legacy of Monsters’ features a prequel about a young Lee Shaw
Another major science fiction series currently airing is Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.
The Godzilla, Kong, and MonsterVerse series stars Kurt Russell and Wyatt Russell and is a family-centered series that combines sci-fi action and character drama.
Just before the new year started, Apple announced that Monarch would be getting multiple spin-off series.
The first of those series sees Wyatt Russell reprise his role as a young Lee Shaw.
According to Apple’s press release:
The spin-off series, starring and executive produced by (Wyatt) Russell, tells the story of Col. Lee Shaw, a U.S. operative who goes on a secret mission behind enemy lines in 1984 to stop the Soviet Union from unleashing a terrifying new Titan that would destroy the United States and change the course of the Cold War.
Emmy-nominated writer and producer Joby Harrold will serve as showrunner. Joby oversees Legendary’s entire Monsterverse series for Apple.
A release date for this first Monarch spin-off has not been disclosed, but it will likely be sometime in 2027 or later.
