If you’re an Apple Watch user who likes to put down your iPhone and go on an outdoor adventure, recent updates to the Strava and Komoot apps should make it easier than ever.
Strava and Komoot upgrade watchOS apps with offline support and more
The Apple Watch has been an accessory for the iPhone since the beginning. And while the product has many features beyond the iPhone, the apps often still rely on having your phone nearby.
Fortunately, two popular apps for outdoor activities, Strava and Komoot, have added important features to make Watch Only even more practical.
as discovered by The VergeStrava and Komoot both now support offline routes in their recently upgraded Apple Watch apps.
This allows users to go outdoors without an iPhone, without a cellular connection, and enjoy step-by-step navigation with offline map support.
From the Strava subreddit:
Now you can see maps directly on your watch while you run, ride, or hike. This includes where you are going and how to retrace your steps if necessary.
If you’re a subscriber, you can follow your saved routes hands-free even when you’re offline. Route suggestions are based on activity data across Strava, so they reflect routes you actually use and love.
From Komoot’s blog post:
The new komoot app for Apple Watch introduces a series of features, including:
- Easily navigate and record offline. Users can navigate offline routes using turn-by-turn routes and record their activity directly from their watch with real-time statistics. Offline navigation is available to all komoot users with an unlocked map area. No premium required.
- A powerful map on your wrist. High-resolution, sport-specific maps with trail, path, and road details. You can zoom and pan around to explore your surroundings.
- Instant root sync and Apple-exclusive features. The app includes the option to download and browse routes for offline use, full integration with Apple Health, and support for Apple Water Lock, which prevents precipitation from interacting with the screen in wet conditions.
These updates may be particularly appealing to Apple Watch Ultra users, but they’re also available for standard Apple Watch models.
