iPhone driver’s license: Here are all states we’re committed to supporting

At WWDC 2021, Apple announced support for adding driver’s licenses and state IDs to Apple Wallet. Since then, more than a dozen US states have rolled out support for the platform.

Apple announces digital ID coming to these states next

The seven states officially participating in support for Apple Wallet digital ID are:

With the exception of Kentucky, there is no timeline for when these states will actually begin supporting this feature.

Other states are also considering support.

In addition to these, many states across the country are also broadly considering the implementation of digital IDs and driver’s licenses. This data is aggregated by the Secure Technology Alliance.

The following states and territories have enacted legislation or research efforts regarding digital driver licenses.

  • tennessee
  • Alabama
  • florida
  • south carolina
  • new jersey
  • Washington DC
  • vermont state
  • connecticut

Progress on these efforts varies widely by state. In some states, all you need to do is introduce legislation to support digital ID. Other states have some activity related to this adoption. However, delays are inevitable as Apple works with governments state by state.

The following states offer some form of their own digital identity platform but are actively working on interoperability.

  • Delaware
  • kentucky

Other states not mentioned here do not currently have digital ID and driver license initiatives underway.
