Xiaomi has taken smart home security to the next level with its new smart door lock M40 Pro. It boasts an impressive 12 ways to unlock your door, which is double what most smart locks offer.
Currently, the smart door lock M40 Pro is only available in China, but it shows that Xiaomi is aiming for something big by fusing advanced biometrics, AI-powered recognition, and multi-device connectivity in its new sophisticated smart lock.
Among the dozen or so ways to get inside are 3D structured light facial recognition, fingerprint scanning, and palm vein recognition, which are only found in ultra-tight security workplaces. If biometrics aren’t your thing, passwords, NFC, app control, temporary codes, and even old-fashioned keys are also supported. They are flexible and adaptable to anyone in the house and any situation, including the occasional guest.
The M40 Pro has two cameras on the outside. A 3 MP main lens with a wide field of view of 175 degrees and a 2 MP secondary lens of 128 degrees. These cameras process full-color video and night vision, and use AI detection to detect faces, people, and even packages left at your door.
There’s a 5-inch digital display inside so you can see who’s inside without opening the door. You can also check live and recorded video using the Xiaomi Home app.
The smart lock supports Bluetooth 5.3 and 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and can connect directly to Xiaomi’s HyperOS Connect, so it works well with other Xiaomi smart home devices. Power is no problem either, running on an 8,000mAh lithium battery backed up by 4 AA batteries, which lasts about 6 months on a single charge. It also uses a C-level lock cylinder, which increases security and reduces noise.
Priced at RMB 3,799 (about £450 or $533), it’s not cheap, but the features more than make up for the price. Xiaomi has not yet commented on whether it will be available worldwide, so for now we have to admire the locking mechanism from afar.
